The Open-Top Mercedes-Benz G-Class Is Coming Soon
When the Mercedes-Benz G-Class first arrived in the U.S.A., it was always a hard top, not just for fashion or utility, but for safety. We noticed that other off-road vehicles offer a removable roof option, primarily for outdoor adventures. Yet, the concern was how well an occupant can be protected with the top open to the elements.

Years ago, Mercedes-Benz did offer an open-top version of the G-Class. This version never officially reached these shores. Perhaps the time has come to bring one over here. One that still matches the enduring spirit of our accomplished off-road-oriented SUV.
Recently, Mercedes-Benz teased an open-top G-Class SUV. Potential customers loved how it was integrated with the current design. They also love the possibilities and potential an open-top G-Class can bring into their lifestyles.
Mercedes-Benz is currently testing prototypes of its open-roof G-Class around the world. In fact, it accomplished its first miles in Austria in various terrains. We would expect testing to continue in places such as the United Arab Emirates, Australia, Sweden, Africa, and even here in North America. Extensive testing in various conditions and climates necessitates the viability of offering an open-top SUV at its ultimate best.

The goal for an open-top G-Class is to match the unparalleled and unmistakable experience expected from current models and to ensure the same rugged capability inherent in our iconic SUV is matched by a roof that opens up the skies, adding that extra experience for our customers. It has to inspire adventure.
The current G-Class offers three different experiences in one iconic package. The G 550 delivers the promise of the icon with a 443-horsepower turbocharged inline-six-cylinder mild-hybrid engine, delivering power to all four wheels through three lockable differentials. It offers a level of luxury expected from a Mercedes-Benz while tackling the roughest terrain around – even the streets of the Metroplex.

The G 580 with EQ Technology is our fully electric version of our legendary SUV. Energy is supplied by a battery pack beneath the cabin; four permanently synchronous motors deliver 579 combined horsepower and an astounding 859 pound-feet of torque to follow the trail of the G 550.
No other G-Class can match the sheer exhilaration of an AMG®â G 63. Tuned by the engineers and technicians who make each engine by hand, the result is a 577-horsepower V8 power source that turns heads and inspires dreams.
