Mercedes-Benz Debuts the Vision Iconic Show Car

The Unique Design Language

Looking at the front of the Vision Iconic, you will notice the upright chrome grille, which tells the story of not just where this car is going, but also where it comes from. This grille most notably shares its style with the W108, W111, and the W100 Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman, which is renowned for its coach-built qualities, catering to the chic and unique clientele who purchased it.

Iconic Lighting

The entire grille and Mercedes star logo feature lighting that is its own style statement, as do the slim-profiled headlights, which provide exactly the amount of light needed for the road.

A New Way to Charge

For the first time, Mercedes-Benz is showcasing its special solar paint coating, which is applied beneath the actual exterior paint and over the car’s body. This solar coating is a nanoparticle-based paint that enables the Vision Iconic to absorb energy from the sun, adding to the car’s electric driving range. This can equate to thousands of extra miles per year, depending on the amount of sun the vehicle is exposed to. At only five micrometers thick and one-hundredth of a pound per 10.8 square feet, Mercedes says this coating allows for 94% of the sun’s energy to pass through to the car. Regardless of whether the vehicle is on or not, the paint can absorb the energy and either use it immediately or store it for later use.

Neuromorphic Computing

The Vision Iconic will also introduce a new type of supercomputing called neuromorphic computing, which enables the car’s computers to operate more like a human brain, allowing them to think quickly. This capability will facilitate tasks such as recognizing road signs more easily and performing them faster. This will greatly assist the new Level 4 automated driving system in thinking, acting, and driving more like a normal person, eliminating the need for human interaction or intervention. Mercedes-Benz says it will be 90% faster than any modern system in cars today.

Steer-By-Wire Steering

Another impressive feature that the Vision Iconic brings to light is an all-new steer-by-wire system, which reduces steering effort in all driving situations. The more you have to turn the wheel, the higher the likelihood that you will need to move or shift your hands along the steering wheel, which can be hazardous. These new features will undoubtedly make the vehicle more responsive and easier to drive in tight parking lots and on smaller roads.
