Mercedes-Benz has the most extensive lineup of EV models in the industry, including both sedans and SUVs, but the new CLA EV might be its most significant EV yet. The CLA 250+ with EQ Technology and CLA 350 4MATIC® with EQ Technology ("with EQ Technology" is MB's longhand for EV) are all new for 2026 and feature the latest technology and capabilities that are likely to be adopted across the rest of the EV lineup. Mercedes-Benz of Plano highlights what makes this vehicle so exciting.
The CLA is the brand's smallest electric vehicle, which adds to the excitement because it makes it ideal for daily commuting. This is where EVs excel. When charged at home, they are ready to start each day with 250–300 miles of range, likely exceeding most people's daily needs. Additionally, EVs perform well in city driving, where every slowdown and stop can recharge the battery, which in the case of the CLA EV model line is an 85 kWh battery. This doesn't mean the CLA isn't suitable for long trips. Its battery can accept charging rates of up to 320 kW from the fastest DC fast chargers, allowing a fill from 10% to 80% in about 22 minutes. A slower charger will take longer, but it's worth noting that the CLA models are the first to come with a NACS charge port compatible with Tesla Superchargers. The model will include an adapter for CCS chargers.
So, the CLA EV models can travel from state to state with ease, but most CLA owners probably have another, larger vehicle as their main tourer, leaving the CLA as the convenient and efficient daily driver.
As mentioned, the current model lineup includes the CLA 250+ and the CLA 350 4MATIC®. The 250+ features a single motor powering the rear wheels, rated at 268 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque. This provides sufficient power for a vehicle the size of the CLA, with a 0-60 time of 6.6 seconds. While not as fast as some electric vehicles, there's often little reason to accelerate for daily commuting.
More power and performance are available with the CLA 350 4MATIC®, which is an all-wheel-drive model thanks to a second motor mounted between the front wheels. Combined, the two motors produce 349 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of instantaneous torque, allowing a 0-60 mph acceleration in just 4.8 seconds. That used to be supercar territory a decade ago, but if you're after more impressive figures, an AMG® model will likely appear soon.
As has been true with gas-powered cars for a century, more power comes at the cost of less range. Official figures are not yet available, but the CLA 250+ is estimated to have a range of around 350 miles, dropping to approximately 275 miles for the CLA 350 4MATIC®.
More new technology is visible in the cabin, where screens can run from one side of the climate vent to the other. It starts with a customizable digital driver information center, while a large central screen controls most of the vehicle's systems through the latest fourth-generation MBUX system. This system is supported by a new Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS) that features AI logic from both Google and Microsoft.
For the user, this means large, clear icons for controlling systems and new navigation graphics enhanced with Google-sourced information. If you prefer, Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ are still available wirelessly, and there is an extensive selection of third-party apps you can download. Additionally, a dash-width screen can be added as an optional touchscreen for the front passenger. This allows the passenger to search for destinations or interact with various other apps while the center screen remains undisturbed for the driver.
Edmunds.com describes the ride as "the most comfortable CLA to date. Its cabin is much quieter than before, with very little noise from the outside world making its way inside. The suspension provides great ride quality on a variety of road conditions."
Due to its size and technology, the CLA model line might be the most fully developed Mercedes-Benz EV so far. Prices will be announced closer to the time the model becomes available in the Mercedes-Benz of Plano inventory.
