The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is a long-running staple of European delivery services, offering unmatched cargo- and people-hauling capabilities in a compact, efficient format while maintaining the level of quality and durability customers expect from a Mercedes-Benz. For 2025, the only diesel-powered van in America can make a case for itself as either the ultimate hauler or the perfect canvas for your next go-anywhere vehicle. Whether you’re working as a mobile valet or contemplating the #Vanlife, the Sprinter can help get you where you need to go — and keep you comfortable while you’re doing it. Just ask Motor Trend.

MT praised the Sprinter 2500 for its surprisingly tame on-road manners. Even without a load putting weight on the Sprinter’s rear axle, the editors noted its quiet, composed character. And while they were able to detect the difference when a 2,500-pound stack of cargo was placed in the rear, the Sprinter nonetheless remained refined and predictable, and the diesel never felt under-matched for the cargo.

_AS_9243.jpgNor should it. The 2.0-liter, direct-injected diesel engine produces a relatively tame 211 horsepower, but a far more robust 332 pound-feet of torque, giving it more than enough grunt to accelerate with a heavy payload onboard. The twelve-foot wheelbase creates a large, uninterrupted cargo space, and its heavy-duty suspension and reasonable ground clearance make it capable of hauling both people and cargo off-pavement, which MT evaluated as well.

“We steered over and through some significantly rugged trails without any hassle and even challenged the van with a hill climb that had it teetering on its diagonally opposite tires,” MT said. “Here, a simple and steady throttle application allowed the traction control to work its magic on the spinning tires, pulling the van forward.”

“Low-range gears or locking differentials are not options on the Sprinter. Anyone with mild off-roading in mind for their Sprinter should have little to fear, and we’ll note there appears to be adequate wheel well real estate for an upsized all-terrain tire for those van-lifers who wanna upgrade later,” MT continued.

_AS_0280.jpgAnd upgrading is the name of the game. Not only can you add official Mercedes-Benz accessories, but the aftermarket world is your oyster, and up-fitters all around the world have been customizing Mercedes-Benz Vans for decades. There is no shortage of builds out there for your personal inspiration.
