A Very Rare Special Edition
With only 460 being produced, the W 460 generation G 550 Stronger Than The 1980s Edition is a real-life version of the show car that was developed to commemorate the 500,000th G-Class built in 2023. Both the show car and the Stronger Than The 1980s Edition are modeled after a 1986 280 GE and are painted in Agave Green. However, the latest model going on sale can also be painted in Colorado Beige or Cream White. All available colors were three of the five original colors in which the G could be painted in the 1980s.
A True Retro Mobile
Continuing with the retro theme, the Stronger Than The 1980s G 550 features an original-style black Mercedes-Benz grille with black headlight surrounds. The front bumper, grille, side mirrors, fender flares, rear bumper, and sills are painted in Magno Black, which is matte-like and mimics the other SUVs’ style. This special model also rides on 18-inch five-spoke wheels with 265/60 Falken Wildpeak A/T off-road tires.
Unique Details
Other unique details that really set the G 550 Stronger Than The 1980s Edition apart are the inclusion of the ‘80s-style amber turn signals that sit on top of the fenders. This was a bit of a challenge, though, as the engineers had to ensure the LED signals could shine in the proper color for regulation purposes. Other details include the original ‘80s three-pointed Mercedes star on the vinyl spare-tire cover, special Mercedes-Benz badge on the hood, original mud flaps, and more.
An Old School Meets New School Interior
The interior features black leather-trimmed seats with black and gray checkered cloth inserts in the same pattern as an actual 1980s G-Wagen. Dark open-pore wood trim on the doors and center console will have the individual number of the special G 550 embossed on it. The concert-level Burmester 3D sound system* and a sunroof are standard in the Stronger Than The 1980s Edition. Other options include a roof rack with rear ladder that is available on regular G models with the G Professional Package.
Engine, Power, and Capability
All 2025 G 550 models have a turbocharged, supercharged, and intercooled 3.0-liter inline-6 that delivers 443 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque. Car and Driver were able to coax the big SUV to a 0-60 mph time of just 5 seconds, which is quicker than the previous V8 model. The EPA estimates that drivers will achieve 17 mpg in city driving and 19 mpg on the highway.
