How do you measure a performance car?
Mercedes AMG® believes that a great performance car must be tested and groomed on the track. Motorsports always measure more than just the car’s overall performance. It is about the driver and their ability to take the car to its limits and back.
The folks at Hagerty Automotive went to a secret racecourse in Germany to ride along with DTM Champion driver Bernd Schneider for some hot laps in the Mercedes-AMG® GT Pro.
The journey starts with Hagerty’s Henry Catchpole driving the Mercedes-AMG® GT 63 S E Performance Coupe. We learn how much he appreciates the performance of this upcoming version of the GT series. Especially when running it through the twisty roads outside of Stuttgart. He called it a “torque monster.”
What is the GT 63 S E Performance? It is the quickest-accelerating series production car the company has ever built. The GT 63 S E Performance was tested on a sprint from 0–62 mph at 2.8 seconds. Powered by a handcrafted AMG® 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V-8, the electric motor adds more performance over the GT 63 S, bringing a combined 803 horsepower with 1,047 pound-feet of torque.
Then, he slides into the passenger seat of the GT Pro with Schneider on this secret racecourse. They get into a good track session by seeing the difference between the GT Pro and the GT 63 S E Performance. A slight performance difference separates the two. Yet, they seem to enjoy what the GT Pro offers on a track full of tight turns and lengthy straights.
Both Mercedes-AMG® GT models show the upper end of this expansive lineup. They serve as inspiration for the current racing efforts this performance coupe currently enjoys on the GT race circuits here and abroad.
On the Fanatec GT World Challenge America and IMSA circuits, Mercedes-AMG® customer teams have made their presence known in both sprint and endurance races. This season was a breakthrough for Mercedes-AMG® drivers in IMSA’s GT Daytona class in the WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series. Drivers Philip Ellis and Russell Ward are tied for the driver’s points lead in their class going into the series finale at the MOTUL Petit Le Mans in Atlanta. However, the team also secured their first manufacturer championship in the GTD class.
