Mercedes-Benz GLS is not only the highest model in the Mercedes-Benz GL series of SUVs, but it is to SUVs what the S-Class has been to all sedans for decades. For example, there have been more expensive sedans than the S-Class, but none have been considered superior in terms of pure engineering excellence. In the same way, the GLS represents the pinnacle of crossover engineering achievement, and the Mercedes-Benz of Plano aims to explain why.
There are four grades of GLS, starting with the GLS 450. This article will concentrate on the V8-powered GLS 580, with a starting MSRP of $112,000*. There are two additional GLS models, each under one of the Mercedes-Benz sub-brands, such as the AMG® GLS 63, which starts at $147,000*, and the overtly posh Maybach GLS 600, which starts at $175,000*.
Subtle Design Enhancements

The 2024 GLS 580 may not immediately strike you as looking different from the 2023 model. Look more closely, and you will notice the larger grille and more robust front bumper, both of which give the model a more powerful look. 22-inch wheels are now standard, and the taillights have been modified slightly to show three distinct light blocks on each side.
Inside is a new steering wheel with touch-sensitive controls within a sleeker shape and more attractive trim. New leather and wood choices are also available. The climate control system has five zones that passengers of all three rows can set.
Unique Features

A GLS 580 may not be the first choice for rugged off-roading. Still, it has an available Off-Road Package that enables the standard air suspension to add another 1.5 inches of ground clearance when needed and skid plates to protect critical areas underneath should the raised height not be quite enough. A multi-camera system enables you to view forward under the front bumper for any rocks or other obstacles you wish to avoid.
A unique but thoughtful feature is the One-Touch Car Wash mode. Activated from the touchscreen, it automatically closes all windows and the sunroof, folds the side mirrors, deactivates the rain-sensing front and rear wipers, and switches the climate control system to recirculate. Finally, it raises the vehicle suspension so the undercarriage and wheel wells can be washed more effectively.
An update to the MBUX infotainment system enables wireless Apple Carplay® and Android Auto®. The system has been enhanced with 50% more processing power to improve responsive time and voice command accuracy.
Smooth, Plentiful, and Effortless Power

Under the hood of the GLS 580 is a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with a mild hybrid drive system. It is paired with a remarkably smooth shifting 9-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission and sends power to all four wheels through the standard 4MATIC® system. The engine produces 510 horsepower, peaking at 5,500 rpm, and 538 lb-ft of torque from 2,000 to 4,000 rpm. The mild hybrid system uses an Integrated Starter-Generator to enable smooth starts after the idle stop system and can add another 20 horsepower when called upon. The powertrain can send the 5,754-pound SUV from stationary to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds.
You will hear the V-8 snarl at full acceleration but level off. The sound quickly disappears and combines with a lack of wind and road noise to create a tranquil cabin. This provides a serene setting to enjoy the standard front seat massage system (available on the 2nd-row captain’s chairs) and the perfect environment to take in the extraordinary Dolby Atmos® sound shaping of the available Burmester® 3D Surround Audio system*, which will make even your most favorite music sound all new again.
Ready to Work

When on SUV duty, the GLS 580 continues to deliver with 17.4 cubic feet of cargo volume when all three rows of seats are up. That space doubles to 36.0 cubic feet when the 3rd row is folded down and more than doubles to 84.7 cubic feet when the 2nd-row seats are folded. The GLS 580 can also tow up to 7,700 pounds. The available Trailer Maneuvering Assist system assists you in that endeavor, which will calculate and display the path of the GLS and the trailer on the center screen when backing up and pulling forward.
There are plenty of luxury SUVs out there, but much like the S-Class, the GLS is the standard by which everything else is measured. Mercedes-Benz of Plano invites you to experience this magnificent machine in our showroom and on the road.
