Even the most well-engineered cars in the world need maintenance. An important maintenance interval to consider is spring maintenance. The following describes key elements of spring maintenance and why they are important. 

Battery Inspection

Cold temperatures slow down the chemical processes necessary for a battery to carry a charge. This could have weakened the battery, leading to possible failure after the winter months have passed. A four to five-year-old battery will be even more vulnerable.   Our service technicians will inspect your battery's condition. This simple procedure can save you from battery concerns in the months ahead. 

Checking or Changing Your Tires

Plano is a relatively small market for winter tires, except for those who prepared their cars for ski trips or other excursions up north and/or into the mountains. If this is you, spring is an appropriate time to change back to conventional tires. Switching to the warm weather traction increase of summer tires should be a consideration of AMG owners or anyone else who likes to explore the handling characteristics of their car. 

Even if you choose to keep your all-season tires, our technicians will do a thorough check to see if there are any issues from any potholes that sprang up after a freeze that took you by surprise or any other unexpected winter road conditions. Older tires will be checked to ensure they have a tread depth greater than 5/32 inches. Also, remember that tires lose 1 to 2 pounds of air pressure for every 10 degrees the temperature drops outside. Plano temperatures in spring tend to fluctuate significantly, so be sure to check tire pressures regularly.

Oil, Oil Filter Change, and Coolant Inspection

The oil in an engine is primarily for reducing friction, engine cooling, and cleaning. The cleaning function is the most important reason your oil needs to be replaced regularly. The impurities picked up can reduce the fluid’s effectiveness in all three of its functions, and the filter will reach its limits. With the hot weather months coming, having your coolant in prime condition will keep your engine running at the proper temperature.  Start your new spring and summer driving season with replacing the oil, oil filter, and coolant.

Other Inspections and Replacements

Plano weather does not require daily ice scraping in the winter months, but the colder weather hardens your wipers, which makes them prone to streaking. As for inspecting your brakes, this is less about what they endured through the winter and more about preparing them for summer, when the summer heat can reduce friction and increase wear.  A good brake inspection will examine pads, discs, lines, fluid, related electrical components, and sensors and can warn of any upcoming issues. 

As springtime can be allergy season, a clean cabin filter can be most appreciated. Replacing the cabin filter regularly can keep allergens at a minimum and decrease the amount of dust entering the vehicle from regular driving.
