The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has created a legacy of being an SUV for people who want a vehicle that compromises nothing. For many years, the G-Class was originally the G-Wagon, as it was developed and engineered to be a German military vehicle that could tackle every situation the military could throw at it. Now, the G-Class is a finalist for the coveted MotorTrend Magazine’s SUV of the Year Award.

Over the last few years, the G-Class has been powered by a V8. However, Mercedes-Benz has given the G550 a massive update, with a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 replacing the former 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. The new supercharged inline-6 produces 443 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque. These power figures are up 27 horsepower over the previous V8 that was under the hood. Thanks to a 48-volt mild hybrid system together with the supercharged inline-6, the G550 achieves better fuel economy and higher performance at lower speeds, where the hybrid system can inject 20 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. While miles per gallon isn’t something most buyers of a luxury SUV worry about, it’s never fun to have to stop for gas, no matter how wealthy you are.

Because of the size and block-like shape of the G-Class, most people wouldn’t believe the luxury Mercedes SUV to be great when the road gets twisty. However, Senior Features Editor Scott Evans remarked, I’m blown away how well the stability control system is programmed. You go around a corner with a little too much speed, and it very carefully brakes the correct wheel to stabilize the vehicle but doesn’t just cut power and throw out the anchor as many systems do. This one almost feels like it’s helping the truck handle better and tuck into the corner.”

Along with the updates under the hood, the G550 also gets significant improvements to the infotainment system. The world-class third-generation MBUX features a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment that is paired with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster that allows drivers to have every piece of information they could ever need to see, as well as the brilliant Burmester® 3D Surround Sound System*. As Technical Director Frank Markus said, “This is an undeniably beautiful interior. Especially given its military roots—deep and distant as they may be at this point.” This G-Class is the best that has ever been available to the public.
