ChatGPT has taken the world by storm, with its ability to come up with answers to ostensibly any question. Soon it will be able to tell you the meaning of life (42).

What Is ChatGPT?

The GPT of ChatGPT stands for “Generative Pre-trained Transformer”. Essentially what this means is that the AI software is given the ability to learn text, coding, and languages, among other things, to be able to provide detailed and accurate information when asked questions.

Now, though, Mercedes-Benz has brought ChatGPT into Americans’ cars by way of Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service. By using the AI service, users can expect a more intuitive experience from Mercedes-Benz’s MBUX voice assistant system.

Hey Mercedes!

Simply saying “Hey Mercedes” brings up the voice assistant. From there, you can ask it to do lots of common things, such as call someone, search for directions, change your climate control settings, news, sports, and weather updates, among many other things.

While most voice assisting software is limited to certain commands, Mercedes aims to use ChatGPT to give customers a more wide-ranging ability to ask seemingly anything to your MBUX Voice Assistant and get an answer.

Signing Up For The Program

If you would like to be involved in such a future, simply tell your MBUX Infotainment-equipped Mercedes-Benz, “Hey, Mercedes, I want to join the Beta program.” The beta program software will be updated over the air when it is available to your vehicle. Mercedes started this program on June 16, 2023, and plans to roll it out to more than 900,000 MBUX optioned vehicles.

Your Personal Data Is Protected

?

With anything AI or software related, you, of course, want to know that your information and data are protected and secure. Mercedes-Benz is committing to the privacy of your personal data. This is where Microsoft comes into play. While ChatGPT is the star, it is powered by Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI service through its powerful cloud and AI systems. The world-class enterprise-grade security of Azure means that not just anyone can ever get access to your data or information. Mercedes-Benz is maintaining full control of the voice command data and storing it in their personal Intelligent Cloud. Once stored, it is anonymized and analyzed.

The beta program is expected to last about three months, and in this time, customers are able to both try out the future of voice command technology, but also provide critical data to Mercedes-Benz, ChatGPT, and Microsoft to best serve you in the future.

Markus Schäfer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, Chief Technology Officer, Development & Procurement, said, "The integration of ChatGPT with Microsoft in our controlled cloud environment is a milestone on our way to making our cars the center of our customers' digital lives. Our beta program boosts the existing Hey Mercedes functions such as navigation queries, weather requests and others with the capabilities of ChatGPT. This way, we aim to support conversations with natural dialogues and follow-up questions. Our customers can always rely on us to ensure the best possible protection of their data privacy. Everything is under one big goal: Redefining the relationship with your Mercedes."
