Decades of iconic roadsters have come down to this.
From Gullwings to Pagodas to the iconic R107 that was a star of many television shows – including one set here in the Metroplex. Everything else that came afterward extended the legacy of the SL.
Now, we have the Mercedes-AMG SL. The next chapter in the legacy of the roadster.
It starts with an all-new structure that combines aluminum and composite materials. The result is that the torsional rigidity of the body shell structure increased by 18 percent. The transverse rigidity is 50 percent higher than the already outstanding value of the two-seat AMG GT Roadster. The longitudinal rigidity is 40 percent higher. The weight of the plain body shell is around 595 pounds (270 kilograms). Together with the low center of gravity, the targeted lightweight construction ensures outstanding driving dynamics.
A stunning new exterior is wrapped around this new architecture. This is a shell that features the AIRPANEL active air control that serves as an aerodynamic aid keeping the SL planted on the road at all times, as well as to induce fresh air into the engine bay. The soft top weighs less than any such roof covering in any SL before it. It also serves to help the SL achieve a low center of gravity ensuring an optimal driving experience you expect from an AMG vehicle.
The interior is in a 2+2 configuration, in which the rear seat can be used for passengers. The driver is enveloped in what Mercedes-Benz calls a “hyper analogue” cockpit, combining traditional elements with digital ones. The center stack is driven by the Mercedes-Benz User Experience with a large infotainment screen offering multiple connectivity and engagement options. This screen is also enhanced by AMG-specific content, designed to bring out the performance element out of your SL.

Initially, the Mercedes-AMG SL will offer two types of performance levels from the handmade twin-turbocharged AMG 4.0-liter V8 engine. The SL 55 offers 469 horsepower, while the SL 63 gives you 577 horsepower. Both models will be connected to the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission with a wet start-up clutch. For the first time in SL history, the roadster will be available with the AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system.
A Performance Hybrid drive version will be offered at a later date.
The chassis will also be innovative with several firsts for the SL. AMG RIDE CONTROL allows you to set the firmness of the suspension for optimal handling and ride experiences. There is an active rear-axle steering that combines agility and stability. The driver also has a choice of six driving modes and AMG DYNAMICS giving you a wider variety of settings for your kind of driving – whichever type of driving you choose to do.
The AMG SL will be one of the first models to be offered with the MANUFAKTUR individualization program, which gives you the choice of options from exclusive paint finishes to special touches for that one-of-one ownership experience.
The new Mercedes-AMG SL is coming soon to Mercedes-Benz of Plano. Contact us to place your order for one in time for their first arrival in the Metroplex area.
