Powering this system is a combination of a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder internal combustion engine and a permanently excited synchronous electric motor. Combined it puts out 381 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque.
The system prioritizes the battery-fed electric motor. This occurs most often while driving in the city. When the battery shows zero miles of range, the electric motor still assists the internal combustion engine in achieving superb efficiency. In turn, braking sends energy back into the battery as a reserve source for driving use. You can recoup more energy when plugging into a Level 2 charger with a 60-kilowatt DC current. You can also plug in a charger from your 110-volt wall socket that runs at 11-kilowatts on AC current.
One benefit of the driveline in the GLE 450e 4MATIC® is efficiency. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, it can achieve around 57 MPGe in the city and 63 MPGe on the highway; these figures reflect the combination of the electric motor and internal combustion engine. It also has an EV range of 49 miles on a full battery. That alone is good enough for commuting to work or doing the weekly shopping without having to use a drop of fuel.

On-board technologies also enable the GLE 450e 4MATIC® to detect hazards on the road and guide you to safe maneuvers, such as making lane changes.
