It was a delightful surprise, given the competitive nature of the most coveted award in the automotive industry. Of course, we feel that MotorTrend chose the right winner this year. This is why we happily announce the Mercedes-Benz E-Class is MotorTrend’s 2025 Car of The Year Award.
MotorTrend carefully selects a field of new and significantly updated vehicles to compete for its coveted "Golden Calipers" each year. This year, the field was 14 such vehicles. An expert team of editors and guest judges thoroughly evaluates every contender based on six key criteria: safety, value, advancement in design, engineering excellence, efficiency, and performance of intended function, to determine which car receives MotorTrend's highest accolade.
The E-Class won for many reasons. Ed Loh, Head of Editorial of MotorTrend Group, cited that "the meticulous and thoughtful changes that went into the 2024 E-Class are easily notable and incredibly impactful, which left the MotorTrend team thoroughly impressed. The E-Class met the mark across all six of our judging criteria and was undeniably the winner when compared to other vehicles in the segment." 
By selecting our longest-running legacy sedan and wagon, MotorTrend found the E-Class offers significantly more than ever before. The new E-Class, available in both Sedan and All-Terrain body styles, combines timeless elegance and luxurious appointments with modern design and innovation. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class has long set the benchmark in the midsize luxury segment.
Both the sedan and All-Terrain wagon are powered by the 375-horsepower 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine with hybrid assist. This engine also puts down 369 pound-feet of torque. A nine-speed automatic transmission is standard along with the 4MATIC® all-wheel-drive system.  The E-Class is also available in the E 350 Sedan with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and the all-new AMG® E 53 Hybrid sedan.

The groundbreaking Mercedes-Benz User Experience marks its third generation with more advanced AI for quicker response to your natural voice. The E-Class previously won the Motor Trend Car of the Year award in 2021. The magazine also named it Import Car of the Year in 1996, as did its predecessor, the W123 280E, in 1977.
