Caring for your car must be a top priority. Knowing about the maintenance the vehicle requires helps ensure proper care. Making assumptions about care, however, isn't enough. Check the owners manual determine the mileage suggested for the oil change, but don't go by mileage alone.

You can't continue to drive with the same motor oil. If 5,000 miles is the cutoff point, the oil should be changed at the designated interval. However, the oil shouldn't remain unchanged when it gets old. Oil breaks down over time. After six months, the oil won't do its job as well.

Even if you didn't drive the car much, the vehicle still requires an oil change at the six-month mark. Going past six months on the oil could require an engine cleaning. In severe situations, the old oil could ruin the engine.
